Principal’s Message
Dear QAS Families,
I want to take the time to address the situation of the
power outage that occurred on Monday. These situations (including snowstorms)
are never easy and in fact, are a huge headache and inconvenience for all.
The main concern must be keeping students, those driving
them and staff safe. As Principals we rely on the information that is given to
us by the authorities/media, in this case, the BC Hydro website. We can only
hope that the information provided is exact. In the event of a snowstorm, the
CISVA Principals in the various geographical areas contact one another and decide
on whether to remain open or close the school. Principals try to make the
decision as early as possible for families, but this is not always possible,
due to weather dependence. However, in this case, only our school was involved.
We found out that the power was out at 6:50 a.m., when a
staff member arrived at the school. The BC Hydro website was stating that the
situation was being investigated. At approximately, 7:45 a.m. the posting
changed to power being on by 9:00 a.m. Knowing that the school was not safe to
enter, due to the darkness, even with the blinds open, the decision was made to
let families know to arrive for 9:00 a.m., rather than have all wait in
vehicles for an extended period.
With no power and needing to get the word out as quickly as
possible, we sent the word out via the various “unofficial” parent chat groups.
While this was not an official portal, we knew that the word would get out
quickly.
An attempt to post on the school website and school social
media portal did not work.
At 9:08 a.m. the BC Hydro website still stated that power
would come on at 9:00 a.m. At approximately 9:15 a.m. the BC Hydro website
changed to “power on” at 10:30 a.m. Given that the first estimate on “power on”
from BC Hydro was later than anticipated and that there was no guarantee of it
coming on by 10:30 a.m., the decision was made to close the school.
Going forward, our Staff Health and Safety Committee is
recommending that we use the SeeSaw App for communication purposes in the event
of a similar situation.
I want to thank the various members of our community who
helped to get information out to others, support each other by watching over
the students or by caring for them on short notice.
God Bless,
J. Sandberg
Principal
