Dear QAS Families,

I have recently read each student’s Learning Update (Report Card) that was sent home before Spring Break.

Additionally, our classroom-based teams meet throughout the year to review student learning and to provide supports for students. Our staff also meets to look at the trends of student learning and to discuss the resources and strategies being used, to ensure that we are meeting student needs. For example, we are seeing wonderful growth in the areas of reading, spelling and writing, with the use of the UFLI resource and the hard work of our students, teachers and parents.

During the reporting period, I also reviewed each student’s attendance records. After seeing the records and speaking with staff, I believe that this is an area of “growth” for our school. Yes, a goal that we can all work on during the third term!

It is important that students have a strong attendance record and are on time for school. Poor attendance and/or frequent lates can lead to disruptions in the learning process. Being on time sets the student up for success by allowing them to calmly line up with their peers and be ready for the day. Our teachers begin the day right away. When a student arrives late, it interrupts the learning of the other students, the teacher’s lesson and puts the student behind in their understanding of the day and the initial activities.

In addition, much of child’s learning takes place directly in class, as does the teacher’s assessment of their learning. When a child misses class regularly or have extended absences away from school, this does affect their learning.

I understand that there are illnesses and emergencies that do occur, on occasion. However, being on time and at school, teach important life skills, such as commitment and being resilient. As an adult, being late for work or away often, will affect one’s ability to hold a job.

Our staff is willing to assist families if there are situations that we need to be aware of. Please let us know, if this is the case.

Let’s make it our goal for the third term to be lined up at our entrance area and ready for school each day at 8:40 a.m.

We can do it!

Ms. J. Sandberg
