School Updates – September 29th, 2021

Safe Haven Sunday

This will take place this coming weekend. Safe Haven Sunday is a weekend set aside by the Archdiocese of Vancouver and parishes to directly address the harms of sexualized content and pornography in an appropriate way. Within the context of the Mass, parishes are able to provide teaching and resources that will support and protect individuals, marriages and families in making all homes a safe haven.

It is inspired by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ formal statement Create in Me a Clean Heart: A Pastoral Response to Pornography, where they explain, “The use of pornography by anyone in the home deprives the home of its role as a safe haven and has a negative effect throughout a family’s life and across generations.”

Kids today are growing up with technology

The internet brings many opportunities for education, entertainment, and communication. But there are also many dangers online – dangers children need to be prepared to handle.

The booklet distributed on Safe Have Sunday: Equipped: Smart Catholic Parenting in a Sexualized Culture uses the image of the home to guide parents in how to teach their children to say no to pornography while at the same time forming them with a broader understanding of:

Their God-given identity,

The importance of sexual integrity

How to understand sexual shame

How to engage media with discernment

“Equipped”

Your family will be receiving a copy of this booklet today. It will be sent home with the oldest child in each family. This booklet makes it possible to have engaged, healthy and informed conversations about online threats. The “Join by Text” code that is on cover of the Equipped booklet does not work within Canada. Parents can still sign up for the 7 day e-mail challenge by going to the following website: https://learn.covenanteyes.com/challenge-equipped/
